He was the son of George and Annie Armstrong, and had three sisters; Annie Muriel, Iris Jessie and Eunice Mary. He also had a brother Joseph Thomas. His parents lived at 9 Mayfield Terrice, Curtis Street, Meadows, Nottingham, though they later moved to 8 Headon Terrace, Wilford Road, Meadows, Nottingham.
The volunteered for service in 1915 with 15th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, but was transferred to 8th Battalion, Royal Scots. He arrived in France on 18/12/1915 and was transferred to 13th Battalion, Royal Scots, which was part of 45th Infantry Bde, 15th Division. The battalion was involved in an attack to improve the jumping off position on the Langemark-Ghueluveldt Line, north east of Ypres. There were very heavy casualties from machine gun and sniper fire, a situation worsened by British artillery firing short. His body was eventually recovered and identified by his service number stamped on his boots.
