Walter William Barnes was born in Arnold in 1898 and was the son of Fanny Barnes, his mother married the late John William Rimmington on 12th February 1899 at the Daybrook parish church and Walter took the name Rimmington. His mother Fanny Barnes was born in 1874 at Newark, his late father John William Rimmington was born in 1859 at Sproxton, Leicestershire. he died in 1903 aged 46 yrs and worked at the water works. They had two further children, John Thomas b1900 and John William Noel b1903 both born at Daybrook. His mother Fanny later re married in 1908 to John Armson a coal miner In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Salop Street, Daybrook,
Private Walter William Rimmington attested on 25th February 1916 at Nottingham, he was called up for service on 15th February 1917 he attested on that day at Hucknall, he stated he was 18 yrs and 11 months of age ,his occupation was that of a brewery labourer at Home Brewery,Daybrook, his next of kin is given as his mother Fanny Armston and the address given was 8 Salop Street,Daybrook. He was posted into the Labourer Corps but was eventually transferred to the 1st Battalion West Riding Regiment. He went to France on 12th March 1917 and was wounded a gun shot wound to his thigh on 11th October 1918, he was treated at the General Hospital at Etaples and was returned to England. Having recovered he embarked from Dover on 26th August 1919 en route to Egypt where he disembarked on 21st September 1919 at Kantara. His battalion was moving by train to Gaza on the 8th March 1920 and it would appear that during the journey the train was involved in an accident as a result of which he was injured and soon died of a hemorrhage. He was buried the next day 9th March 1920 at Gaza Military Cemetery.
