Family History

Frederick Wilson was born in 1890 at North Muskham and was the son of Charles a general labourer and Sarah Wilson née Hallam of North Muskham. His father Charles was born in 1866 at Burton Sleaford, Lincolnshire and his mother Sarah Hallam was born in 1864 at Newark, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district. They went on to have 9 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Frederick b1890, Frank b1894, Charles b1898 Maurice b1902 and Kate b1907 all were born in North Muskham. In the 1911 census the family are living at North Muskham and are shown as Charles 45 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 46 yrs and their children, Frank 17 yrs a joiner, Charles 13 yrs a scholar, Maurice 9 yrs a scholar and Kate 4yrs of age. Frederick married his wife Mercy Gasson on 4th August 1912 at Holy Trinity Church, Tottenham, they lived at Kimbers Place, Chelwood Gate, Uckfield, Sussex they went on to have two children, Norah Margaret born 29th November 1912 and Norman Frederick born 12th April 1914. Following Fredericks death his widow Mercy was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence commencing 27th May 1918.

Military History

Lance Corporal Frederick Wilson enlisted at Guilford whilst residing at Uckfield , he served with the 10th battalion The Queen's (Royal West Surry Regiment ). He suffered shrapnel wounds to his right leg in July 1916. He was killed in action on 20th September 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Extra Information

His brother Frank enlisted on 28th November 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 227 days, his occupation was a boatman he was living at North Muskham and his next of kin was his father Charles, he was posted to the reserves the following day. Mobilised for war on 4th January 1916 he was posted to the Royal Engineers and landed in France on 20th November 1916. He was gassed on 10th April 1918 and awarded the Distinguished conduct medal (gazette on 1st May 1918) and was discharged on 25th February 1919. Article published in the local Newark press following his death :- Eldest son of Charles & Sarah Wilson of North Muskham. Born North Muskham and aged 11 in 1901. Married Mercy Gasson, daughter of Humphrey Gasson of Kimbers Place, Chelwood Gate, Sussex. They had a son Norman and a daughter Norah. Enlisted at Guildford. Previously suffered a shrapnel wound to right leg, in hospital at Birmingham
