James Robert Crane

James Robert ('Bertie') was born in 1880 (registered J/A/S), the son of James and Annie Crane who had four children; Beatrice, Florence, James and Noel.His father was a lace designer and draughtsman (employer) and in 1891 the family lived at 71 Noel Street, Nottingham. By 1901 the family was living at 426 Radford Road, Nottingham. All four children were at home on the night of the census: Beatrice (25), James Robert (20) a veterinary surgeon and Noel (17) who was a lace curtain designer, presumably working in his father's firm, and their married sister Florence Haylock (24) with her son, Eric (3 months). Also in the household was a general domestic servant, Mary Street (18).James Robert married Gertrude Coleman Healey in 1908 (A/M/J, registered Basford) and they had two children, Barbara (b. 1909, Helston, Cornwall) and Robert (b. 1911, Nottingham).In 1911 James was living at The Cottage, Kegworth, Derbyshire. In the household was his one-year old daughter, Barbara, and Sarah Elizabeth Walker (26) who was described as a visitor but whose occupation was domestic servant. James' wife and their son Robert (under 1 month) were at his parents home at 426 Radford Road, Nottingham, on the night of the census. It is possible that Sarah Walker was employed temporarily by James and Gertrude to assist in the home and with their two infant children.At the time of James' death in 1918 the family was living at 188 Burford Road, Nottingham.His father, James, died on 2 April 1916 aged 62 years and his younger brother, Noel, died the following year on 25 October 1917 aged 33 years. His mother died on 15 April 1936 aged 81 years.
