Father: George Abbott, born in 1831 at Southwell, Nottinghamshire and working as a bookbinder and stationer. Mother: Emily Abbott, born 1839, Westminster, London. They family lived at 5 Arboretum Terrace, Goldsmith Street, Nottingham. Frederick William had two brothers; George Samuel, born in 1875 in Nottingham and working as a bookbinder, and James Alfred, born in 1878 also in Nottingham and working as a bookbinder. James served in the army but was wounded on 23 January 1916, and discharged unfit on 15 June 1916. Frederick William also had one sister, Emily Isabella, born in 1885 in Nottingham. He was educated at the Nottingham High School.
Gnr. Abbott was called up and following training was drafted to France. In September 1917 the R.G.A. batteries were positioned behind the front line that ran from the sea to Nieuport. It was a quiet area, but being relatively flat it was prone to German Counter battery work. Gnr. Abbott was killed in action on 21/09/1917 and was buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery (IV.A.5)
