Clarence Henry was born in 1893 in Nottingham and was the son of Charles a railway guard and Kate Wells née Hopper, of 60 Bunbury Street, Meadows, Nottingham. His father Charles was born in 1867 in Nottingham and his mother Kate was born in 1868 also in Nottingham. They were married in 1892 in Nottingham and had a further son William born in 1895. In the 1911 census the family are living at 44 Woodward Street, Meadows, Nottingham, and are shown as Charles 44 yrs head of the family, a railway guard, he is living with his wife Kate 43 yrs and their 2 sons Clarence 18 yrs a shop assistant and William 16 yrs a printer's assistant. His mother Kate died in 1915 in Nottingham, just a few weeks before her son's death. She was 47 yrs of age. At the time of Clarence's death his father was living at 60 Bunbury Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
Gunner Clarence Henry Wells, enlisted in Sheffield on 26th November 1914, he gave his age as 21 yrs, he stated he worked for 'Boots' and that his address was 44 Woodward Street, Trent Bridge, Nottingham. His next of kin was his father Charles of the same address. He was posted as a gunner to the 22nd Company Royal Garrison Artillery, and joined them at Newhaven on 30th November 1914. He died of heart failure after enteric fever on 24th February 1915 at the Nottingham Isolation Hospital. He is buried in Nottingham Church Cemetery.
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged) 26 February 1915: WELLS February 24th at Isolation Hospital of enteric fever, Clarence Henry Wells, Royal Garrison Artillery, son of Charles and the late Kate Wells, aged 22 years, late of Woodward Street. Interred Church Cemetery Following is a further obituary place in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 24th February 1916 and reads: - “WELLS. – In loving memory of Clarence (Lall), Gunner C. Wells, R.G.A., who passed away February 24th, 1915, a loving son who lived to mourn the loss of his mother but 13 days. – From his sorrowing father and brother Bill (Gunner W.
