He was the son of James and Rachel Bagshaw and the brother of Harry Bagshaw. In 1891 they lived at Risley. He was the husband of Jane Agnes Bagshaw and the father of Ethel Bagshaw. In 1911 they lived at 17 Trafalgar Terrace Radford Nottingham.
John Bagshaw entered theatre (France) after 1 January 1916 and was posted to 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters. This battalion had been severely weakened in the German Spring offensives and were moved to a quieter area, the Chemin des Dames, to recuperate. On 27 May 1918 a surprise German attack was launched which pushed all units back. After intense fighting the situation slowly improved but at great cost. By 6th June the battalion had sustained 680 casualties - one officer killed and nine other ranks, ten officers wounded and 217 other ranks and eleven officers missing along with 431 other ranks. Many of these were men who had recently replaced losses from March and early April. John has no known grave and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial. John Morse
