Albert (Bert) Asher was born in 1888 in Nottingham and was the second son of Thomas Huckerby Asher, a police sergeant, and Naomi Asher née Hayes. His father Thomas Huckerby was born in 1857 in Great Gonnerby, Leicestershire and his mother Naomi Hayes was born in 1856 in Buckminster, Leicestershire. They were married in 1878; the marriage was registered in the Melton Mowbry registration district. They went on to have six children , Marion b1880, Ada b1881, Anthony b1882, Albert b1888, Percy Thomas b1893 and Margaret b1896. All the children were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 152 Queens Walk, Meadows, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas Huckerby 54 yrs a police sergeant employed by the Nottingham Corporation, who is living with his wife Naomi 55 yrs and their children Marion 31 yrs a dressmaker, Albert 23 yrs a warehouseman, Percy Thomas 18 yrs a warehouseman and Margret 15 yrs a shorthand student. Also living with them is Jane Asher 87 yrs a widow (Albert's grandmother). His parents later lived at "Woodleigh," Ingoldsby, Grantham. (CWGC) Albert's brother Percy Thomas Asher enlisted in Nottingham on 3rd September 1914. He gave his age as 21 yrs and 266 days. Percy served in the Royal Field Artillery and landed in France on 12th July 1915. He served on the Western Front until 1st October 1918 when he returned to England and continued to serve until his discharge on 31st March 1920.
Lance Corporal Albert Asher, Supply Railhead Army Ordnance Corps, died from pneumonia at the Military Hospital, Dieppe, on 22nd November 1918. He was buried in Janval Cemetery, Dieppe.
