Family History

Charles Henry Dorn was born in 1896 the son of George Thomas a coal miner hewer and his first wife the late Mary Alice Dorn née Todd of Kirkby in Ashfield. George Thomas was born in 1871 at Abington, Berkshire, Mary Alice Todd was born in 1865 at Caistor, Lincolnshire she died in 1899 aged 34 yrs, married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had the following children, John Thomas, Alice, Leonard and Ada Dorn. His father re married in 1901 to Mary Eliza Peat their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, In 1911 the family lived on Hodgkinson Road East Kirkby.

Military History

Private Charles Henry Dorn enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at East Kirkby, he landed in France on 31st August 1915. He was reported missing and wounded on 23rd April 1917 during an attack on the German lines, later confirmed killed in action on that date. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
