Lewis Worth (senior) married Margaret Sanderson at Chelsea on the 6 Jan 1880. Lewis’s occupation was a butler and he spent many years of his life travelling the country for work, (Chelsea London, Lancashire, Buckinghamshire. Surrey, Sheffield Yorkshire, Worksop Nottinghamshire). They had four children, Francis Henry born in 1885, Lewis (junior) in 1886, Percy in 1888 and Bernard born 1894. In 1911 Lewis senior had secured a job of Hotel keeper in the Greyhound Hotel in Worksop. Francis worked there as a barman, Bernard was recorded as a motor boat engineer and Lewis junior, a motor car driver. When war was declared, Lewis joined from Worksop and his brother, Francis joined the South Staffordshire Regiment at Sheffield and was also killed on the 19 February 1917 on the Western Front.
Lewis Worth was killed in action in the battalion's first battle of the war on 9 August 1915. After initial success they came under intense fire and had to fall back to a tenable line. The casualties were high with half of the battalion killed or wounded. Lewis has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. Research by Colin Dannatt
