Family History

Arthur George Compton was born in 1893 at Newton Burgoland, Leicestershire he was the son of Edward Green a grocer/draper and Katherine Elizabeth Compton née Haywood of Newton Bridgeland, Ashby De La Zouch. Edward Green was born in 1857 at Leicester, Katherine Elizabeth Haywood was born in 1852 at Twycross, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Market Bosworth registration district, they had 4 children. In 1911 the famil are living at Newton Burgoland, Ashby De La Zouch, Edward Green is 54 yrs a grocer/draper he is living with his wife Katherine 59 years and their children, Percy 23 yrs a grocers assistant, Cecil Edward 21 yrs an engineers turner and fitter, Francis John 20 yrs a builders apprentice and Arthur George 18 yrs a farm student. Arthur George emigrated to New Zealand between 1911 and the outbreak of the Great War.

Military History

Sergeant Arthur George Compton enlisted on 18th August 1914 at Rangiora, Canterbury New Zealand he was initially with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion being transferred to the 2nd Battalion. He embarked overseas on the 16th October 1914 from Wellington aboard HMNZT 11 “Athenic” bound for Suez, Egypt. His promotion record is as follows, Lance Corporal 25th September 1915, Corporal 1st February 1916 and finally Sergeant 4th March 1916. Egypt. He was killed in action on 21st September 1916 and is buried at Caterpillar Valley Cemetery 19.D.3
