Family History

John Westerdale was born in 1892 at Keyworth and was the son of Edward a sweep and Hannah Westerdale nee Wilkinson of Main Street, Keyworth. His father Edward was born in 1844 in Clerkenwell, London and his mother Hannah Wilkinson was born in 1860 at Darrington, Lincolnshire , they were married in 1889 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Ada b1890, Sarah Ann b1891, John b1892, Catherine May b1893, Elizabeth b1895, Jane b1897, William b1901, all were born in Keyworth. In the 1911 census his family are living at Main Street, Keyworth and are shown as Edward 66 yrs a sweep, he is living wit is wife Hannah 51 yrs and their children, Catherine 18 yrs a hosiery machinist, Elizabeth 16 yrs a hosiery joiner, Jane 14 yrs a hosiery winder and William 10 yrs a scholar. also living with them is Alice Gertrude 2 yrs a granddaughter. In the same 1911 census John now 19 yrs of age has left the family home , he is shown as being single a farm servant living at Pinfold Farm, Selston with Elizabeth Foster 66 yrs a widow and her family.

Military History

Private John Westerdale enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Keyworth , he served with the South Nottinghamshire Hussars, his medal index card shows his first theatre of war was Egypt landing on 26th April 1915. He was killed in action on 22nd August 1915 at Gallipoli, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. Panel 16
