Family History

Son of George and Jessie Hart, he was born at Tunbridge Wells. By 1901 the family had moved to Nottingham and were living at No 748 Woodborough Road, Nottingham. In 1911 the family were living at No 7 Osborne Grove, Sherwood. George was a Gardener working for the Board of Guardians at Bagthorpe Hospital and Leonard was a telegraph messenger. George had died by 1915 and was buried in Carlton cemetery. Jessie too was eventually buried there and Leonard was also commemorated on the kerbstone surrounding the grave.

Military History

Leonard enlisted as a Private at Nottingham on 2 December 1915. By May 1916 he had become a Gunner 2nd Class with No 4 Howitzer Brigade of the Royal Marine Artillery. From May to December 1916 he was with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Egypt serving with the school of cookery until March 1916. In August 1916 he was transferred to Sollum, then Silsilleh in December 1916. On 17 January 1917 he embarked at Alexandria to return to England on the Kingstonian. On January 1st 1918 he had some home leave in the UK before going to France where he was wounded in action on 19th March 1918. He later died of his wounds and was buried at Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France. He was eligible for the Victory and British medals
