Background information: In early October 1917, the British offensive at Ypres in Belgium once again turned towards the northeast of the town with an attack aimed at taking the village of Passchendaele situated on the high ground there, but the attack on the village on the 12th October failed. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig was nevertheless determined to capture this high ground outside Ypres before winter set in and continued to make the village of Passchendaele his main objective. Repeated attacks from the direction of Hooge, and the Gheluvelt plateau were made over the next couple of weeks and it was during one of these probing attacks towards the Passchendaele Ridge that Daniel was killed in action on the 19th October 1917, when aged 31 years.
