Daniel was the youngest son of Dr Daniel Stenhouse LRCP&S and Mary Stenhouse nee Worrall. His father Daniel was born in Trinity Gask, Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland, in about 1849, the son of David and Isabella Stenhouse. Daniel qualified in Edinburgh as a physician and surgeon, graduating in 1876. His mother Mary was born in Arnold in 1852 (A/M/J Basford) the daughter of John and Hannah Worrall. According to the 1881 Census, John Worral was both a farmer of 51 acres and a builder employing eight men. Daniel and Mary were married at the Ebenezer Church, Arnold, in 1878 (A/M/J Basford) and shortly after their marriage went to Chu Chia Province in China where Daniel was a medical missionery for the Methodist Church from 1878 to 1885. They returned to Arnold in 1886. Daniel and Mary had four children, two of whom were born in China: Hannah Isabella b. Tisntsui China 13 September 1879, John Worral b. Tisntsui China 9 November 1880, Daniel Harold b. 16 September 1886 (O/N/D Basford) and Mary Florence Hilda b. Arnold 10 December 1889 (1890 J/F/M Basford). In 1891 Daniel (42) a medical practitioner and Mary (38) were living on Front Street, Arnold, with their four children Hannah (11), John (10), Daniel (4) and Mary (1). By 1901 the family had moved to Redhill Road, Arnold; all four children were still living at home. Daniel's occupation was now given as physician and surgeon. The family was living at Arnold House, Church Street, Arnold, by the time of the 1911 Census. Hannah (31) and Mary (21) were of no occupation, but John (30) was a fruit grower (own account) and Daniel (24) was a chemist's assistant. Daniel snr. died on 8 December 1916 at Arnold House, Arnold; he was 68. His funeral service was held at the Ebenezer Church Following the death of her husband, his widow Mary moved to 109 Nottingham Road, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. However, by the time the CWGC record was compiled she was living at 14 Melrose Avenue, Sherwood, Nottingham. Mary died on 4 July 1925; she was still living at the same address. Of Daniel's siblings: Hannah was living with her brother John at 14 Melrose Avenue, Sherwood, in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled. Her occupation was given as chemist's assistant (retired). Hannah died on 16 May 1963; her address was given on the probate record as Bridgefield, Castleton Road, Hope, Derbyshire. John was living with his sister Hannah in the family home at 14 Melrose Avenue in 1939. His occupation was given as fruit grocer (retired). John died on 1 November 1953; he was still living at the same address. Mary was living at 15 Westgate, Southwell, in 1939; her occupation was given as companion housekeeper. Also in the house was Catherine M Horsley (b. 18 January 1863), single, occupation 'retired'. Mary died on 15 December 1969; she was then living at 37 Cornill Road, Carlton, Nottingham.
He enlisted at Axminster, Devon, in November 1915 giving his place of residence as Colyton, Devon. He joined the Somerset Light Infantry, regimental number 22843. He later transferred into the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and was posted to the 6th Battalion. He was killed in action on 19th October 1917 and is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium (grave ref. Plot X. Row D. Grave 6). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Background information: In early October 1917, the British offensive at Ypres in Belgium once again turned towards the northeast of the town with an attack aimed at taking the village of Passchendaele situated on the high ground there, but the attack on the village on the 12th October failed. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig was nevertheless determined to capture this high ground outside Ypres before winter set in and continued to make the village of Passchendaele his main objective. Repeated attacks from the direction of Hooge, and the Gheluvelt plateau were made over the next couple of weeks and it was during one of these probing attacks towards the Passchendaele Ridge that Daniel was killed in action on the 19th October 1917, when aged 31 years.

Stenhouse, of Arnold, was instantaneously killed by shell fire on the western front on October 18th. He was 31 years of age, was educated at Nottingham High School, and was recently studying for the medical profession. He responded to the call of duty, and joined his Majesty's forces in November, 1915, becoming attached to the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, and had served at the front for 15 months. Registers of Soldiers' Effects and Pension Ledger record: His mother, Mary, was his legatee. Daniel is also commemorated on the Colyton Grammar School war memorial in Devon. Family memorial formerly in the Ebenezer Methodist Church, Arnold, but transferred to Arnold Methodist Church when Ebenezer Church was demolished. The inscription reads: ‘In loving memory of Daniel Stenhouse LRCP&S Edin. Pioneer medical missionary to North China 1878-1885. Medical practitioner in Arnold from 1886-1916. Local preacher for 30 years and Mary, his dearly beloved wife & youngest daughter of John & Hannah Worrall. Greatly Beloved. Effects £2499 11s. 3d. The Stenhouse Medical Centre at 66 Furlong Street, Arnold, is named after Dr Daniel Stenhouse, the first doctor in the practice. Daniel practised from Ebenezer House, an old farmhouse on Worrall Avenue, Arnold, until 1897 when he moved to live and practise from Arnold House, Church Street, Arnold, until his death in 1916. The practice remained at Arnold House until 1970 when it moved into Arnold Health Centre, finally transferring to the purpose-built Stenhouse Medical Centre in April 1991.
