John was the son of John Edward an innkeeper and Emma Lowe. On the 1901 Census the family was living at St Mary's Place Shrewsbury. His effects of £3527 17 shillings and 8 pence were left to Albert Alexander Lowe, a removal contractor (Probate 1/3/1922 Shrewsbury).
He was a trooper in the 4th Battalion Australian Light Horse. He embarked for the Western Front on board HMAT Wiltshire which sailed from Melbourne on 19th October 1914. He was killed in action on 13th August 1915 while serving in the Dardenelles. He is buried in Shell Green cemetery , Gallipoli, Turkey Grave Reference: I C 29.
The 4th Light Horse is the only Light Horse Regiment that saw significant service in both the Middle East and the Western Front. It thus posseses a unique set of Battle Honours, including the most famous Light Horse battle of them all; the charge at Beersheba. After Gallipoli, where the Light Horse had fought without its horses, two squadrons were dispatched to the Western Front. The remainder stayed in Palestine.
