Family History

Rowland was born in 1897 the son of George William a maltster and Martha Ann Jeffery of 55 Pope's Grove Twickenham. George and Martha had two children Rowland and Violet. In 1901 the family was living at 27 Northolme, Gainsborough.By the 1911 census Rowland had left home to become a student boarder at St Cuthbert's College Sparken Hill Worksop. His family in the same census was living at 216 London Road Twickenham where they employed two servants.

Military History

Rowland served as a private in the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps. From there he was placed on the General List and was commissioned on 9th September 1916 . He then served in the 55th Squadron Royal Flying Corps and was killed in action on 21st May 1917. He is buried at Vis-En-Artois British Cemetery Haucourt Pas de Calais, France Grave Reference: XI B 12.

Extra Information

His father George William Jeffery also served in the Great War as a second lieutenant and later lieutenant in the Army Service Corps in Mesopotamia. He survived the war.
