John Wilson was born in 1899 in the Meadows, Nottingham and was the son of Thomas a gas department stoker and Emma Wilson née Gallimore of 30 St James Street, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1868 at St Pierre, France, his mother Sarah Jane Gallimore was born in 1871 at Walsall, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, they went on to have the following children, Laura b1890 Nottingham, Thomas b1897 Carrington and John b1899 Meadows, In the 1911 census the family lived at 38 Dickinson Street, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham and were shown as Thomas 43 yrs a stoker for the gas department, he is living with his wife Emma Jane 41 yrs and their children, Laura 21 yrs a hosiery machinist, Thomas 14 yrs a fishmongers assistant (Jesse Robinson) and John 11 yrs a scholar.
Private John Wilson, enlisted at Nottingham and initially served with service number 93163 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment). He later transferred to the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 27th May 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial.
Death notice published 8th February 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WILSON. – Missing May 27th, 1918, now presumed killed, Pte. J. Wilson, Durham Light Infantry, aged 19, the dearly loved young son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, 30 St. James's-street, Nottingham. 'Tis hard to part with one we love so dear, but some day we may understand.” In memoriam published 27th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WILSON. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. J. Wilson, Durham Light Infantry, presume killed May 27th, 1918, or after, in his 19th year. No morning dawns, no night returns, but what we think of you. – Sadly missed by his loving mam and dad. “WILSON. – In ever-loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. J. Wilson (Johnny), D.L.I., presumed killed May 27th, 1918, or after. Love hath ever-lasting remembrance.
