He was the only son of James and Fanny Mumby who had two children, Nora and Albert Charles. He was known as 'Charlie'. Both James and Fanny (Fannie) were born in Lincolnshire but at the time of the 1901 Census they were living at 11 Guildhall Cottages, Shakespeare Street, Nottingham, with their two children, Nora (6) and Albert (4), both of whom had been born in Nottingham. James was employed as an engineer with the City Fire Department. They were still at the same address ten years later in 1911 although it was described as '11 Guildhall Buildings'. Both their children were at work, Nora as a milliner and Charles as a clerk in a lace warehouse. James and Fannie later lived at 'Walcot', Rockley Avenue, Radcliffe on Trent, Nottinghamshire (CWGC).
He served in France from 4 December 1915 and was reported missing after the first day of the Battle of the Somme although his death was not confirmed until the following year. He is buried in Hawthorn Ridge Cemetery No 1 Auchonvillers (grave ref. A.26). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 15 June 1917: 'Mumby. Missing July 1st 1916, now reported killed, Lance Corporal AC Mumby (Charlie), Signaller, Royal Fusiliers, only son of Mr and Mrs James Mumby, 11 Guildhall Buildings, age 20.'
