Ernest was born in 1894 in Salford, Lancashire and was the son of John Moir a grocer and beer retailer and Mary Jane Moir née Phillips, they lived at 54 Hungerhill Road, Nottingham and later, 8 Tudor Grove, Colville Street, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1862 at Cove Shore, North Berwick and his mother Mary Jane Phillips was born in 1862 in Nottingham, they were married in 1888 in Nottingham. They had six children , sadly 1 died in infancy their surviving children were :- John William b1888 in Nottingham, Nellie b1889 Salford, Florence b1893 Salford, Ernest b1894 Salford and Leslie b1902 in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 54 Hungerhill Road, Nottingham , John is 49 yrs head of the family and a grocer and beer retailer, he is living with his wife Mary Jane who is assisting in her husbands business and their children , John William 23 yrs a wooolens warehouseman, Nellie 21 yrs a blouse maker , Florence 18 yrs a typist in a lace warehouse, Ernest 16 yrs a clerk and Leslie 9 yrs a scholar.
Pte. Ernest Moir, enlisted in Nottingham and served with 1/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He landed in France on 28th June 1915 he died of wounds on 25th March 1916 at 30th Casualty clearing station in France. He is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension grave reference I A 9.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 25th March 1918 :- “MOIR. – In loving memory of Ernie, 1/7 Sherwoods, beloved son of John and Mary Moir, 8, Tudor-grove, died in action March 25th, 1916.
