Edward was the son of Henry Merchant and his wife Margaret nee Marsden. Henry Merchant was born in Nottingham about 1863 the son of George Merchant. Margaret Marsden was born in Kirkdale, Lancashire, on 2 October 1865, the daughter of Thomas Marsden. Henry and Margaret were married in the parish church of Maghull, Lancashire, on 1 September 1892. They had four children of whom only three survived infancy/childhood: Edward Massey b. 1893 (J/A/S Nottingham), Constance Helen b 2 January 1897 (J/F/M Nottingham) and Ethel Margaret b. 27 October 1899 (O/N/D Nottingham). All three children were born in Nottingham. In 1901 Henry Merchant (38), a bank clerk, and Margaret (35) were living at 17 Newstead Grove, Nottingham, with their children Edward (7), Constance (4) and Ethel (1). Henry employed two servants, Annie Harrison (21) a domestic servant, and Hannah Buxton (15) a nurse (domestic). Henry (48), now a cashier in the Capital and Counties Bank in Nottingham's Market Place, and Margaret (45) were still living at 17 Newstead Grove in 1911. In the home on the night of the census were their children, Edward (17), Constance (14) and Ethel (11) who were all at school. Also in the household was Sarah Jane Wade (39) a domestic servant. Henry Merchant died on 10 February 1926 (Mar Nottingham) aged 63. At the time of the 1939 England and Wales Register, Edward's widowed mother Margaret, who was described on the register as 'incapacitated', was still living at 17 Newstead Grove, Nottingham. Also in the home were her two unmarried daughters, Constance, who was engaged in 'unpaid domestic duties', and Ethel, a nursery class helper. Edward's mother died on 12 April 1950; she was still living at 17 Newstead Grove. Constance died on 10 July 1971 (Sep Nottingham) aged 75 and Ethel died on 14 March 1978 aged 78; she was then living at 2 Hampstead Court, St Alban's Street, Sherwood, Nottingham.
“B” Company, 11th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Edward died in Nottingham General Hospital on 18th April 1918 of wounds received in action. He was buried in Wilford (St. Wilfrid) Churchyard.
