Godfrey was born in 1877 in Nottingham and was the son of Godfrey a music professor and Sarah Ellen Budworth née English. His father Godfrey was born in 1822 in Nottingham and his mother Sarah Ellen English was born in 1843 in Beverley, Yorkshire, they were married in Beverley in 1864 and went on to have 7 children , 1 of which sadly died in infancy , their remaining children were all born in Nottingham and were :- Charles b1869, Edith b1871, Clara b1873, Godfrey b1875, Nigel b1878, Sarah b1880. In the 1901 census the family are living at 30 North Sherwood Street, and are shown as Godfrey 80 yrs living on his own means he is living with his wife Sarah 59 yrs they are living with their four Charles 33 yrs a wig maker, Godfrey 26 yrs a grocers assistant, Nigel 23 yrs a grocers assistant and Sarah 31 yrs. His father died in 1903 in Nottingham aged 80 yrs. He married his wife Nellie Beatrice Franks at St Mathias Church, Sneinton on 1st April 1907 at this time he was living at 139 Front Street, Arnold, they went on to have a son Bernard born 16th March 1914 at Nottingham. By the 1911 census his mother is now 69 yrs a widow and is living at the same address 30 North Sherwood Street, with her son Charles English 43 yrs a wig maker. In the same census Godfrey has moved out of the family home and is living at Sherwood Street, Nottingham with his wife Nellie both are shown as boarders , he is 34 yrs and a grocer , his wife is 28 yrs and a machinist in the lace trade. They are living with Matilda Ford, single 58 yrs of age, (no occupation listed ) Godfrey was discharged from the Army on 25th July 1917 and within five months died at his home address on 20th December 1917 and was buried at Nottingham General Cemetery on 24th December 1917. At the time of his death the family were living at 17 Burgass Place, Carrington Nottingham.
Private Godfrey James Budworth enlisted at Hucknall on 24th June 1916, he was placed into the reserves the following day. He gave his age as 39 yrs and 1 month , his occupation as a grocers porter and his next of kin as his wife Nellie Beatrice Budworth On 15th November 1916 he was called up and was posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment. He served and trained from 15th November 1916 until 11th March 1917 went he went to France and joined the British Expeditionary Force, he was transferred to the Labour Corps on 3rd March 1917 and served in France until 15th April 1917 when he was returned to England. He was found no longer fit for war service and discharged from the army on 25th July 1917. He was issued a silver badge number 215001. He died on 20th December 1917 and was buried in the Nottingham General Cemetery
He is not recorded on the CWGC Death notice published 22nd December 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BUDWORTH. – On December 20th, suddenly, Pte. G. J. Budworth, Lincolns, died at his home, Burgess-terrace, Carrington. Military funeral, 1 o'clock, General Cemetery, Monday.” Article published 24th December 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “The funeral took place at the Nottingham General Cemetery to-day [24th December 1917] with military honours of Pte. G. J.
