Norman was the son of William Clarke and Lucy Carter (née Snelson ) of 46 Claverton Street Pimlico, London. William and Lucy had 5 children. In 1901 the family was living at Oxford Road Littlemore Oxfordshire and by the 1911 census had moved to 80 Chelsea London SW. William was a clerk for the Metropolitan Water Board.
At the age of 18 years and 2 months Norman enlisted into the Army on 12th May 1911. He served as trooper 2844 with the 1st Life Guards of the Household Cavalry. However on 2nd August 1914 after serving 2 years and 295 days he was discharged from the army at his own request for which he had to pay the sum of £18. He was gazetted 4/1/1916 and served again with 13th battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. He died from wounds received on 23rd July 1917 and is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, Pas De Calais , Grave Reference: III K 33
