Family History

Walter was the son of Walter a farmer and Annie S Binder of Red House, Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham. Walter and Annie had three children Walter, Majorie and Henry. In 1901, when Walter was 4 years of age he and his family were living at Red House Farm 440 Worsley Road,Rotherham. In 1911 he was a student at St Cuthbert's College, Sparken Hill, Worksop.

Military History

Walter enlisted at Sheffield. He was promoted to the rank of lance corporal.

Thiepval Memorial This is an extract from 'The Cuthbertian' college magazine April 1919 Walter Binder, late of the Red House, Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham, was born on October 20th, 1896. He joined the Sheffield Pals, 12th Yorks and Lancs at the same time as the lnmans. He was a Lance-Corporal, and had been recommended for a Commission. He was reported "Missing" on July 1st, 1916, and since then nothing further has been heard of him.
