Family History

William Alexander Smith Bayliss was registered at the Tewkesbury Register Office on 28th December 1886 by his mother Eleanor Jane Bayliss of Applerley Deerhurst a domestic servant. In 1891 he was living at Gabb lane,Deerhusrt, Tewksbury with his grandparents Elias a general labourer and his wife Mary Bayliss. In 1901 he was a boarder at St Cuthbert’s College, Sparkenhill, Worksop. His uncle Arthur Charles Bathurst became the executor and legatee of William’s estate. His effects were £172 16 shillings and 10 pence.

Military History

He enlisted at Henley-on-Thames aAccording to his medal index card his first saw service in a theatre of war in France on 20th September 1914. He was promoted to Sergeant and on the 5th July 1917 he was killed in action while in the trenches at Gillemont Farm, Picardy. He is buried in Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery. France
