Alfred Whitworth was born on 21st July 1892 at Clay Cross, he was baptised on 8th September 1892 at Clay Cross Parish church, he was the son of Samuel a coal miner and Georgina Whitworth née Towndrow of Brassington Street, Clay Cross. His father Samuel Whitworth was born in 1863 at Holmgate, Derbyshire, his mother Georgina Towndrow was born in 1865 at Claycross, they were married on 13th August 1883 at Claycross, they went on to have 14 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Brassington Street, Clay Cross, Samuel 48 yrs acoal miner onsetter, he is living with his wife Georgina 46 yrs and 9 of their children, including Alfred 18 yrs a coke labourer.

Military History

Private Alfred Whitworth enlisted at Clay Cross, he served with the11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 7th July 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
