Family History

John Henry Shannon was born in 1894 at Cloneven, County Wexford, he was the son of John a land steward and Lizabeth Shannon OF Ireland. His father John was born in 1849 at County Wicklow, his mother Lizabeth was born in 1853 in County Wexford they had the following children, William, Joseph, Robert, Lily, Sarah and Mary. In the 1911 census John Henry Shannon is living at York Ave, Jacksdale, he is shown as being 18 yrs and a labourer, he is lodging in the house with Henry Hill 51 yrs a coal miner labourer and his wife and family.

Military History

Private John Henry Shannon enlisted at Eastwood on 5th February 1916 whilst residing at Jacksdale, he served with the 2/8th Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France in February 1917. He was killed in action on 7th June 1917 and is buried in Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetery British Extension grave reference 1.C.5
