Family History

Ernest Knight was born in 1892 at Pye Hill and was the son of Edward a coal miner and Amelia Knight née Roberts of Pye Hill, Jacksdale. His father Edward was born in 1854 at Ramsholt, Suffolk his mother Amelia Roberts was born in 1859 at Codnor Park, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had 12 children , sadly 5 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Arthur b1879, John b1881, Jane b1883, Edward b1887, Ernest b1892, Albert b1898, Frank b1900 and Ettie b1906 all were born at Pye Hill. In the 1911 census the family were living at 59 Pye Hill, Jacksdale and were shown as Edward 57 yrs a coal miner at Pye Hill Colliery, he is living with his wife Amelia 52 yrs and their children, Ernest 19 yrs a coal miner Pye Hill Colliery, Albert 13 yrs a caol miner at Pye Hill Colliery, Frank 11 yrs a scholar and Ettie 6 yrs of age

Military History

Private Ernest Knight enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 13th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 25th August 1915, he was wounded in action on 4th October 1915 and returned to England for treatment. He returned to France at Christmas 1915 and was killed in action by shrapnel on 4th July 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Extra Information

A local newspaper article, 'Selston Roll of Honour (Jacksdale Ward)', includes Ernest Knight. It records that he was wounded on 4 October 1915 and evacuated from France but returned to France at Christmas 1915. He was killed in action the following year.
