John George Jepson was born in 1896 at Codnor, Derbyshire, he was baptised on 27th April 1898 at Ironville, Derbyshire and was the son of George, a coal miner, and Elizabeth Jepson, née Clarke of 18, Top Row, Pye Hill, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire. His father George was born in 1865 in Codnor and his mother Elizabeth Clarke was born in 1871 also at Codnor. They were married in 1894 and their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. In the 1911 census they state they have been married for 17 yrs and have had 8 children, sadly 7 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. However, the personal inscription on the CWGC headstone includes the words 'Father and sister', suggesting a surviving sibling. In the 1911 census the family are living at Pye Hill, Jacksdale and are shown as George 46 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 40 yrs and their son John George 15 yrs a bank lad at a colliery.
John George Jepson attested on 12th December 1915 at Eastwood. He gave his age as 19 yrs 4 months, his occupation as that of a coal miner and his address as 18 Pye Hill, Jacksdale. His next of kin was his mother Elizabeth Jepson of the same address. John George was posted to the Reserves and mobilised on 25th April 1918; by now he was 21 yrs and 10 months of age. He was posted to the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters. Landing in France on 13th August 1918 he was killed in action on 20th October 1918. John is buried in Amerval Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref. A.27).
