Family History

Henry Joseph Howard known as 'Harry' was born in 1891 at Ironville, Derbyshire and was the son of Frank an ironworker and Alice Howard née Pickaver of 31 Queens Street, Ironville. His father Frank was born in 1855 at Leicester, his mother Alice Pickaver was born in 1856 at Wymondham, Leicester they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district, they went on to have 6 children sadly 4 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 Queen Street, Ironville and are shown as Frank 56 yrs an ironworker puddler, he is living with his wife Alice 55 yrs and their son Harry 20 yrs an ironworker puddler.

Military History

Lance Sergeant Henry Joseph Howard enlisted at Ripley whilst residing at Codnor Park, he served with the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 31st July 1917 and is buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, Pas De Calais, France
