Family History

George William Hill was born in 1888 at Codnor Park and was the son of the late Phillip Aaron a colliery labourer and Eliza Hill née Clayton of The Common, Jacksdale. His father Phillip Aaron was born in 1857 at Alfreton and died in 1915 aged 58 yrs, his mother Eliza Clayton was born in 1856 at Greek Green, Staffordshire, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 5 children, Fran Clayton b1887, George William b1888 both were born at Codnor Park, they then had the following children, Rowland Miles b1890 Joseph Wilfred b1894 and Phyllis Lilian b1895 all were born at Jacksdale. In the 1911 census the family are living at the Common Jacksdale and were shown as Phillip Aaron 54 yrs a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife liza 55 yrs and their son Wilfred 17 yrs a hairdresser.

Military History

Segeant George William Hill enlisted at Barrow in Furness whilst residing at Jacksdale, he served with the 92 field company Royal Engineers, he died of wounds at the 49th casualty clearing station, France, on 13th December 1916 and is buried at Contay British Cemetery 8.E.19
