William Wood Gibbins married his wife Martha Kirby (born 26th July 1892) in 1912 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at Albert Avenue, Jacksdale and went on to have daughter Edna Mabel Gibbins born 29th August 1913. Following his death his widow Martha was awarded a pension of 16 shillinf which commenced on 2nd April 1917 this was increased to 21 shillings and 3 pence on 4th April 1917. His widow went on to re marry on 30th March 1918 to Harry Bacon.
Sergeant William Wood Gibbins enlisted at Cardiff whilst residing at Jacksdale, he served with the 8th battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers. He landed in France on 17th December 1915 and was killed in action on 3rd September 1916. He us buried at Delville Wood Cemetery Grave Reference: XII E 3
He had originally served with the Royal Navy, he joined up on his 18th birthday 16th November 1904 for 12 yrs service. He had two periods of absence during his naval service, the first on 18th May 1908 and later 29th October 1910. His later absence lasted until 24th April 1911 when he was recovered. He was subsequently dismissed from the Royal Navy.
