Family History

John Thomas Turner and Clara Isabella Lee married 181887. They settled in Newstead, Notts where John worked in the local colliery as a coal miner. They produced six children whilst living at residence 33 Newstead Colliery their names being, John Edward, Ernest, Mary, George, Tom and William. In 1905, John Thomas’ wife, Clara died age 37 but he remarried to Mary Jane Ashman two years later. The following year they had a son who they named Allan. Of the brothers, it was second son, Ernest (born 1891) who left to fight in the war but did not return.

Military History

Ernest joined the Army by enlisting at Hucknall and served with the Royal Field Artillery ‘C’ Battery 100 Brigade. His medal card shows that he was initially sent to France on the 8th July 1915 and consequently was awarded the 1915 Star as well as the Victory and British medals. His days ended whilst fighting in the Salonika Campaign on the Macedonian front , sometimes called “The forgotten War”. He died of his wounds and is buried in the Sarigol Military Cemetery, Greece B.293 Extract from ‘Wartime Memories Project’. The Royal Field Artillery served with the 22nd Division in WW1. The Division assembled for training in the area of Eastbourne and Seaford with the Artillery based at Lewes. They proceeded to France in early September 1915, concentrating near Flessellers. In October they moved to Marseilles by train and embarked for Salonika on the 27th. In 1916 the division fought in the Battle of Horseshoe Hill and Battle of Machukovo. On the 21st July 1916, C Battery transferred to 101 Brigade and was renamed C Battery, 101 Brigade. In 1917 they were in action during the Battles of Dorian. In mid 1918, the Division was again in action at Dorian, just before the Armistice with Bulgaria was signed at the end of September
