Family History

John Smith and Anne Harley who both were natives of Bilston, Staffs, married prior to moving to Newsted around 1888. The Smith family had ten children between 1895 and 1908. The first two were boys, John George and Albert (born Glamorgan, Wales) the remaining eight were all girls, born in Newstead where their father worked as a miner. In 1911 the family were resident at 12 Vernon Road, Old Basford, except for the two boys. Albert had married on 17th July 1909 at Lynby, Notts and was living with his new bride at 8 Newstead Colliery, working as a coal miner. His wife was Rebecca Wolfe, a native of Newstead. They had three sons, Albert born 12 Oct 1910, Leslie 6 June 1911 and John Henry on 4 March 1914.

Military History

Albert was attested on the 10th May 1915 at Nottingham with the Sherwood Foresters for the duration of the war. After carrying out training he was drafted to France on 6th May 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal on the following June. In October 1916 he was returned to the UK but back again 26 March 1917 and posted to the 2nd Battalion on 19 April 1917. It was whilst serving with this Battalion that his life was ended. He is buried in the Queant Road Cemetery Buissy 6.H.26
