Family History

William Russell was the third child of William Russell and Alice Ryder born in 1894. William senior had settled in Hucknall Torkard working as a miner, after spending his childhood and youth in Staffordshire. His wife, Alice, was a local girl born in Hucknall Torkard. The couple had another four children beside William junior. They were Amanda born 1891, Joseph 1892 , John 1902 and Arthur born 1906. The family had moved to Newstead between 1902 and 1906 and were resident at 120 Newstead Colliery. In 1911, William the younger, was employed as a pit pony driver in Newstead colliery. William senior died in 1918 age 60.

Military History

William Russell enlisted at Nottingham. He was drafted to France on 14th September 1915 with the Royal Engineers 171 Tunnelling Coy. The job of the Tunnelling company was to mine under the enemy lines, placing explosives and blowing them up. In some areas, both sides mined and counter-mined intensively. He was killed whilst in action and buried at Potije Chateau Grounds Cemetery 1.A.38 in Belgium
