John Thomas Parkin and Annie Greensmith married in1889 probably at Newstesd, and registered at Basford. They lived for many years at 6 Newstead Colliery where all their children were born. Their six children were, John William born 1889, Celia Augusta 1892, Jimima May 1894, Vernon Greensmith (named after mother) 1896, Winson Leslie 1898 and Cyril born 1900. In 1911 John Thomas Parkin was employed as a deputy, John William as an electrician and Vernon as a wagon painter, all at Newstead Colliery.
The date when Vernon joined the 2/8th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters is not known, but after forming it spent time on Garrison duty at Newark, Luton, Dunstable and Watford. Although only partly trained, they were rushed to Ireland on the outbreak of the Easter Rising in 1916, it saw severe street fighting in Dublin before the rebellion was quelled. The Battalion spent the rest of the year on garrison duty in Ireland before finally reaching France in February 1917. It was seven months later that Vernon was killed in action on 26/9/1917 and buried in the New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium, Grave 14.A.20
