Family History

Allan William Fletcher was born in 1896 at Newstead, Nottinghamshire. He had four younger sisters, Clarice, Dorothy, Edith and Olive and a half brother, John. His father was Colliery worker, William who had married his first wife, Mary Emma Blackham who gave birth to John before dying in 1891. Four years later he remarried to Lily Moss and had the remaining five children all born in Newstead living at Stonehouse, Newstead Colliery. When William was only 14 he was employed as a joiner’s apprentice at the colliery. His father died in 1912.

Military History

He enlisted at Hucknall and, according to his medal card, went to France on 28th November 1915. His movements and exploits are not on public record and his service record has not survived but he served throughout the war and died of his wounds 2nd October 1918 just a few weeks from the armistice. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
