Thomas Jenkins Cheney was born in Wellingboroigh, Northamptonshire in 1883. His next record is in the 1891 census, when he is a 7 year old boarder in the Crawly household, 21 Midland Cottages, Wellingborough, giving no indication of his parents. In 1901 he was once again living as a boarder in the household of tobacconist Soloman Beresford, working as a coal miner at Newstead Colliery Cottage number 4. In 1906 he married Ethel Albon, a native of Hucknall, Torkard, the marriage being registered at Basford, Notts. They produced a daughter who they named Ella Elizabeth in 1908 and three years later were recorded in the 1911 census as resident at 10 Newstead Colliery where Thomas was working as an ostler below ground (pit pony driver).
Thomas is known to have enlisted at Hucknall and fought on the Western Front. He died of wounds received in battle and is buried in the Brandhoek New Military Cemetery 5.F.7
