John Allwood from Derbyshire married Margaret Armstrong, (a native of Scotland) in Glasgow, where their first child, Helen, was born in 1889. By the 1891 census, the three of them were resident in Leicester and with the addition of a son who they named John, who had been born in February of that year. This family had moved again the following year, as the unfortunate death of John was recorded in 1892 in Nottinghamshire. It was on the 4th October 1896 when the couple had their next child, born at Calverton, Notts, and called Herbert. Helen and Herbert were soon to become orphans as in 1898 Margaret Allwood died and the following year, their father, John died. After this terrible event, Herbert was placed in the Basford Union Workhouse but by 1911, at age 13, he is living as a boarder, going to school, under the roof of Mrs Geary, a 74 year old widow, at 95 Newstead Colliery, Notts. His sister Helen (Ellen or Nellie) found employment as a domestic servant with Reuben and Harriet Arnold in Calverton and was later adopted by them. On 24th October 1911 she married George Wright. She was named as sole legatee in the Soldier's Effects record.
The 9th Battalion sailed from Liverpool in early July 1915 for Gallipoli, landing at Suvla Bay 7 August 1915. The survivors of this battle were evacuated from Gallipoli in December 1915, and moved to Egypt. They moved to France in July 1916 and fought through the remaining Somme offensive. Due to the date of Herbert's death (his 21st birthday) and memorial location, he probably was killed in the fight for Passchendaele. As his body was never recovered his name is recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
