Family History

He was the son of John and Sarah Ann Copley and the brother of Dorothy Jane, Philip Harry and Joyce Ellen Copley. In 1911 they lived 26, Tentercroft Street, Newark.

Military History

Private Cyril Bennett Copley initially served with the service number 34022 Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) and served with the Regiment during the Irish Rebellion. He later transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and was posted missing in action but was later reported as wounded and a prisoner of war. This man died in 1965 aged 68.

Article published 10th January 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Copley Cyril Bennett Son of Mr Copley, 84 Hewson Road, Lincoln, formerly Newark manager for Singer Machine Co., Middlegate. Prior to the outbreak of war was for six years in the office of Messrs. Thorpe & Sons, maltsters. He enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters and was in the rebellion in Ireland. Afterwards went to the front and transferred to the Royal Warwicks. Posted missing some time ago, later reported as wounded and POW.
