Frederick William Oakley was born in 1885 at Doncaster and was the son of James a railway engine driver and Emma Oakley, Webster of 43 Chados Street, Netherfield, Nottingham. His father James Oakley was born in 1858 in Rugeley, Warwickshire and hs mother Emma Jane Webster was born in 1858 in Scottier, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1884, their marriage was recorded in the Doncaster Registration District, they went on to have 7 children, sadly one died in infancy their surviving children were Fred William b1885 Doncaster, James Robert b1887 Doncaster, George b1888 Doncaster, Phillip b1894 Netherfield, Mary b1896 Netherfield, Emma b1898 Netherfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 43 Chandos Street, Netherfield, Nottingham and are shown as James 53 yrs a railway engine driver, he is living with his wife Emma Jane 53 yrs and their children, Frederick 26 yrs a printers packer, James Robert 24 yrs a railway engine stoker, George 23 yrs a labourer, Phillip 17 yrs a general labourer, Mary 15 yrs, Emma 13 yrs

Military History

Frederick William Oakley served with the 2nd battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry, he died returning from Salonica on 2nd January 1919 and was buried at sea. His name is commemorated on the Doiran Memorial, Greece.
