Family History

Walter Needham born in Misson 1895 son of John and Martha Needham,( nee Priest). His mother, Martha Elizabeth died in 1903, age 36 and when 16 years old was living with the Saul family in Tickhill working as a horseman on a farm. He married Elsie Todd, whilst awaiting mobilisation, on 11 Sept 1916 in Misson parish church. A son, Walter, was born to them on 2 Aug 1917. After the war and the sad fact of Walter’s death, his wife was awarded a pension of 20/5 per week for herself and 1 child commencing 6/1/1919 and she received Walters British and Victory medals on 2 May 1922.

Military History

Walter Needham was attested and passed his medical at Retford on 29 Jan 1916. He reported his next of kin, as his father, JohnNeedham of Gebdyke, Mission. He was mobilised on the 1st Dec 1916 and after training, embarked to France on 21 April 1917. He was lucky enough to be granted leave going to the UK via Boulogne 24th Feb 1918 to 10th March 1918. He had only been back in action on the Western front for two months when he was killed. He is commemorated on the Klien-vierstraat British Cemetery, Belgium
