Family History

John Ward and Elizabeth Maria Mitchell married in 1887 at Brackley, Northhants. Their first child died in 1892 age two, the same year that John Ward was born. The family moved to the Mattersey area where children Winifred was born in 1896, and Cyril Henry born at Everton, Notts in 1897. The year following Cyril’s birth saw the death of John Ward aged 46. After two years as a widow, Elizabeth married for a second time to George Nicholson in 1900 registered at Retford. In the following census year of 1901, Lilian Nicholson had been born, the family being resident at Mattersey and were still there 10 years later. By now George Nicholson and his stepson, John Ward were both working as domestic grooms and Cyril was employed as a store room lad at Ranskill steel works.

Military History

As his service record has not survived, the only brief details of Cyrils' war experiences is that he enlisted at Retford and was killed in action. He is buried in the Caestre Military Cemetery, France.
