Henry (Harry) Graham and Evelina Blythe married in 1888 in Mattersey where they set up home in Church Street, Harry started as a market gardener but by 1901 he was a publican and farmer. They had six children who were all born in Mattersey, Ernest Sydney born in 1890, Joseph in 1891, Albert Leonard 1893, Frank Bernard 1894, Evelina born 1897 and Jesse born in 1900. In 1909, Harry died at the age of 45 leaving his widow, in 1911, Inn keeper of the Blacksmith’s Arms in Mattersey. The four eldest of the family were all boys and were all employed in farm work.
Frank Graham was attested at Retford age 21 on 12 Feb 1916 for the duration of war and put on the Army Reserve as No. 39579 Lincolnshire Regiment. He was mobilised on 25 March 1916 and transferred to 2/7 Royal Scots 14 April 1916. Then on the 25 July 1916 he was granted 28 days leave for farm work at home. He was drafted to France with the BEF on 7 June 1917. Shortly after arrival he was posted to 9th Bn Royal Scots on 23 June 1917. He was reported missing on 21 March 1918. On Jan 7th 1919 his mother wrote a letter to the Army authorities enquiring if there was any further news of her son, 301355, Pte Graham (reply unkown). It was later confirmed his date of death to be from the date he went missing. As his body was never found or identified and therefore has no known grave, he is commemorated on Pozieres Memorial, France.
