Family History

Frederick Endersby was born on 16th December 1882 at Bayswater, London, he was the son of Frederick James a groom and Eliza Antoinette Endersby née Godfrey of Bowman Court, Nottingham Road, Mansfield. Frederick James was born in 1858 at Standon, Hertfordshire, he died in 1917 aged 59 yrs, Eliza Antoinette Godfrey was born in 1859 at Hammersmith, they were married in 1882 at Kensington, London, they had 5 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood his siblings were Ross William b1885, May b1889, Albert Thomas b1891 and Caroline b1903. In the 1911 census the family are living at Bowmans Court, Nottingham Road, Mansfield, Frederick 51 yrs is a groom, he is living with his wife Eliza 50 yrs and their daughter Caroline 8 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census we find that Frederick has left the family home, he is living at Begsbroke, Oxfordshire, he is 29 yrs of age single and a servant, living with Charles Claude Bertie 59 yrs a widow, living on his ‘private means’

Military History

Private Frederick Endersby enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He landed in France on 13th February 1915 he was killed in action on 4th April 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.

Letter from Frederick's brother Tom to his parents printed in Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser on 15/04/1915. " It has fairly done for me, and I don't think I shall be the same has I have been. Never mind, he is out of misery. I hope the Lord spares me to come through so I can tell you the tale." Frederick had been sharing a cup of tea with Tom on Easter Sunday when he was shot through the heart, he died in Tom's arms. Tom survived the war.Tom was Private 151583. He was a miner who enlisted with the Lincolnshire Regiment transferring to 182nd Tunnelling Coy Royal Engineers. He was discharged early in 1919 after a fire accident at home. (ASR) He was the husband of Lily (née Daubney) Endersby and the father of Doreen Endersby.
