Family History

John Herbert Askew was born in 1899 at Ruddington and was the son of Herbert Askew a horseman on a farm and Emma Archer Askew, née Askew of Hill Farm, Linby, Nottinghamshire. His father Herbert was born in 1872 at Congleton, Cheshire, his mother Emma Archer Askew was born in 1878 at Redhill, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1898 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, John b1900, Albert b1904 and Doris b1907 all were born in Ruddington. In the 1911 census the family are living at Hill Farm Cottage, Linby and are shown as Herbert 38 yrs a horseman on a farm, he is living with his wife Emma 33 yrs and their children, John 11 yrs a scholar, Albert 7 yrs a scholar and Doris 4 yrs of age

Military History

Private John Henry Askew attested on 23rd May 1918 at Nottingham and enlisted at Derby on 25th May 1918 he gave his age as 18 yrs 11 months and his occupation as a farm worker working at Hill Farm Linby. He was attached to the 4th Battalion Gloucester Regiment 12th June 1918. He went to France 23rd September 1918 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment 26th September 1918. He was killed in action, 8th October 1918, during the attacks on Doon Mill Copse and Doon Hill, near Brancourt, France. He is buried at Ramicourt British Cemetery, France. Row B. Grave 19.
