Harold Mosedale

Harold was the son of William John and Hannah Mosedale (née Maltby). His father William John Mosedale was born in Perlethorpe, Nottinghamshire, in 1859, the son of George and Fanny. The family was living in Perlethorpe in 1861 but by 1871 had moved to Gedling. In 1881 William was a railway engine fireman and living with his parents on Stoke Lane, Gedling. His mother Hannah Maltby was born in 1861 (J/F/M Basford). William and Hannah were married in 1882 (A/M/J Nottingham) and according to the information provided by Hannah on the 1911 census they had had five children: Clara Alice b. 15 June 1883 (J/A/S Basford) bap. 22 July 1883 Gedling All Hallows, Annie b. 1886 (O/N/D Basford), Nellie/Nelly b. 11 August 1889 (J/A/S Basford), Harold b. 1891 (O/N/D Basford) and Fanny b. 4 July 1894 (J/A/S Basford). However, a sixth child has been identified from the registrations of birth: George Mosedale b. 1885 (J/A/S Basford-Maltby) who died the same year (1885 J/A/S Basford). In 1891 William (31), a railway engine driver, and Hannah (30) were living on Dennis Street, Carlton, with their three children, Clara (7), Annie (4) and Nellie (1). Harold was born later that year and Fanny three years later. William John Mosedale died in 1896 (O/N/D Basford) aged 37. In 1901 the widowed Hannah was living at 10 Baden Terrace, Rupert Street, Meadows. Her five children were in the home on the night of the census: Clara (18) and Annie (14) who were both lace workers, and Nellie (11) Harold (9) and Fanny (6) who were at school. Also in the household was a boarder, J Willing (19 b. Devon) a railway engine cleaner. By 1911 Hannah had moved to 6 Willow Road, Carlton. Only Annie (24) and Nellie (21) both machinists (frilling) and Harold (19) a threader lace machine, were living at home. Also in the household on the night of the census was a visitor William Marshall (24), an unemployed locomotive fitter, who later was to marry Annie. At the time of the 1911 Census Harold's sisters, Clara (27) and Fanny (16), were living on Waterhouse Lane, Gedling, in the household of Richard Atkin (48) a frilling manufacturer, and his son Richard Henry (21). Clara was the housekeeper and Fanny a domestic servant. Richard Atkin died on 5 May 1938; he was still living at Crescent House, Gedling. Hannah Mosedale died in 1921 (J/A/S Basford). Of Harold's sisters: Clara and Fanny were living at Crescent House, Waterhouse Lane, Gedling, at the time the 1939 England and Wales Register was compiled suggesting that they had continued to be employed by Richard Atkin (d. May 1938) from the time of the 1911 Census. Fanny died on 19 March 1941; she was then living at 'Talamera', Nottingham Road, Burton Joyce. Administration of her will was awarded to her unmarried sister Clara. Clara Alice died on 17 June 1966; her home address was then at Dalby Avenue, Bushby, Leicestershire. One of the two administrators of her will was her sister Nellie's son-in-law, Ernest Coulbourne. Annie probably married William Marshall in 1914 (J/F/M Basford). Nellie married Arthur Thomas Huckerby (b. 1 June 1887) on 25 December 1911 at Emmanuel church, Bestwood Park. They had two children, Dorothy b. 21 April 1912 and William Arthur b. 2 July 1920. William married Eileen M Grant in 1937 (O/N/D Basford). In 1939 Nellie was living at 'West View', Waterhouse Lane, Gedling, with her daughter Dorothy a builder's clerk, and Ernest Coulbourne (b. 20 October 1911) also a builder's clerk. Dorothy and Ernest were married in 1941 (A/M/J Basford); Dorothy died in 1975 A/M/J SE Hampshire) and Ernest in 1989 O/N/D Isle of Wight). Arthur Thomas, a lithographic artist, and his son William, an ordnance survey draughtsman, were registered at 10 Kipling Road, Eastleigh, Hampshire, in 1939 in the home of Elsie Motteshead (married, unpaid domestic duties). Nellie died on 19 December 1948 aged about 59; she was still living at 'West View'. Her husband Arthur was executor of her will. Arthur died on 25 August 1961; he was then living on Hayling Island, Hampshire. His son and daughter were executors of his will.
