Walter Leaper

Walter was born in 1891 in Gedling and was the son of Joe a railway pointsman/flagman and Emma Leaper née Wood, they lived at Main Road, Gedling. His father Joe was born in Gedling in 1858 , his mother was born in 1866 in Waltham, Leicestershire, they were married in 1887 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Gedling :- William b1882, Nellie b1888, Walter b1891,Ernest b1893 and Edward b1897. His mother Emma died in 1906 aged 47 yrs , the death was recorded in the Basford Registration district. A year later in 1907 Joe re marries to a Sarah Ann Scothern (born Lambley 1872), their marriage is recorded in the Basford Registration district. In the 1911 census Walter is shown as being a Private in the 1st battalion Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, he is 19 yrs of age and was in barracks with his battalion in India. In the same 1911 census his family are living at Main Street, Gedling and are shown as Joe 53 yrs a railway pointsman head of the family, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 39 yrs and his children , William 29 yrs a bricklayer, Ernest 18 yrs printers labourer and Edward 14 yrs a butchers errand boy.
