Sidney was the son of William and Sarah Ann Bown, one of 12 children, although only 6 survived. He was born in 1888 at Far Cotton in Northamptonshire. His father William worked on the railways and the family moved around. In 1891 they were living in Tamworth, then in 1901 they were living in Peterborough. By 1911 they had moved to Stoke Lane Crossing at Gedling where William was the Gate keeper. Sidney had left home and had enlisted in the army prior to 1911.
Enlisted in the army before 1911. He was serving in India according to the 1911 census based at Gough Barracks Trimulgherry, Deccan India serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters. Sidney, along with several others in the Regiment was away from the Barracks at Wellington now known as Tamil Nadu which was another military base. By the outbreak of war Sidney was a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, going to Turkey 16 Nov 1914. He was taken a prisoner by the Turkish forces 29 April 1916 and died 12 August 1916. He was buried at Baghdad (North gate ) War Cemetery, Iraq. He was eligible for the 1915 Star, Victory and British medals.
