Family History

Daniel Smith was born in 1887 at Gotham the son of Joseph and Emma Smith née Hogg. Daniel married Elsie Mills (born 14th May 1889) in 1912, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at Gotham and had the following children, Joseph Alfred born 11th May 1912, Clarence Ernest born 2nd October 1913, Daniel Arthur born 23rd October 1916 and Eric born 18th July 1918. Commencing 25th November 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Daniel Smith, served with “A” Company, he enlisted at Carlton whilst residing at Gedling he served with 1/8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was reported as missing in action between 21st and 23rd March 1918 and later reported killed in action on 12th April 1915. He is buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.
