Family History

Herbert Arthur Whitby was born on 10th January 1894 at East Leake and was the son of Arthur Whitby a Prudential insurance agent and Eliza Ann Whitby née Blower of Main Street East Leake. His parents were both born in 1869 at East Leake and were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Lougborough registration district, they had 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in East Leake and were Herbert Arthur b1894, Nora Evelyn b1898, Maude b1900, Ivy b1904 and George Wilfred b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at West Street East Leake and are shown as Arthur 42 yrs an insurance agent working for Prudential Insurance he is living with his wife Eliza Ann 42 yrs and their children Herbert Arthur 17 yrs an office boy, Nora Evelyn 13 yrs a hosiery hand, Maude 11 yrs a scholar, Ivy 7 yrs a scholar and George Wilfred 3 yrs of age.

Military History

Able Seaman joined the Army Reserve on 10th December 1915 and was mobilised on 26th July 1917. He was drafted to the British Expeditionary Force on 17th December 1917. He was posted to Nelson battalion Royal Naval Division on 4th January 1918 he joined 7th the Entrenching Battalion on 22nd February 1918 and finally posted top the Hood Battalion on 15th March 1918 & detached to 189th Infantry Brigade HQ same date. He was killed in action on 24th March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
